Have you ever wondered why some people go out of their way to hurt others?
One of my mother’s “momisms” as we call them is “hurting people hurt people.” This simple statement has helped me, throughout my life, to reflect and then understand the feelings of others.
When my childhood best friend bossed me around, my mom would encourage me to think about why she acted that way. With her encouragement, I realized that maybe she acted that way because she had two older siblings who bossed her around.
Mom’s instruction to reflect on the behavior of others before responding was like passing down a precious family heirloom. It helped me develop a pattern throughout life of reflecting before acting.
And in case you were wondering….Mom didn’t minimize the importance of assertiveness, she just took that extra step with us to explain how others feel.
